My Most Surprising & Disappointing Books of 2020

Writer's picture: bookishequestrianbookishequestrian

I’ve done my list of my best and worst books of 2020, so here’s the surprising and disappointing list. There were a few on here that are on other lists but they are unavoidable.

DISAPPOINTING

Here are the books that were the most disappointing to me. I might still have given them good ratings but they might not have lived up to the hype or how much I thought I was going to love them.

The Girl The Sea Gave Back by Adrienne Young

No one should be surprised this made it to both my worst books of the year and this list. This was so disappointing as The Sky In The Deep was one of my favourite books of 2019, but I just didn’t vibe with this book. I found until the last 50 pages it was very boring, the characters that were in the previous book were all very different, they didn’t age the way I expected. There wasn’t any character depth at all and it just wasn’t a fun read for me.

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

I gave this book 3 stars. There wasn’t much I enjoyed in this book and looking back, my rating could be put down to a 2 star. The characters are what let this book down so much for me. I really didn’t like any of the characters and found being in Jude’s POV wasn’t the best. Carden was my favourite but I didn’t even enjoy his character very much. I have had this on my shelf for a while now and I had been putting off reading it in case it let me down. Which it did.

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

Earlier this year I watched the TV show Shadowhunters and really liked it. I was very excited to read the books as everyone says the books are better. And I didn’t like it at all. I found Clary and Jace to be very annoying and I couldn’t stand them. The plot was ok and I did like the side characters but there just wasn’t enough of them to help me like the book. I’ve read the first three and I am still deciding if I am going to continue with the series.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner

I loved the movies and was looking forward to reading them. This time I just didn’t gel with Dashner’s writing style. I still can’t say what about it I don’t like, I just don’t. I also felt like the characters weren’t that fleshed out and the plot sometimes was lacking in its depth.

Silver Brumby’s Daughter by Elyne Mitchell

This was such a let down as The Silver Brumby is one of my favourite books of all time. This was a reread for me but I didn’t remember anything from it. It took me quite a few months to figure out why I didn’t enjoy this book very much and I think it comes down to Kunama. I just don’t think I liked her which makes it difficult to enjoy the book that is mainly about her.

Gemina by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

I think why this book is on the list, comes down to mainly me overhyping this book after loving Illuminae. Since Illuminae was my favourite book until Kingdom of Ash, I had been putting Gemina off because I was scared it wouldn’t live up to Illuminae. I had put Illuminae on such a high pedestal Gemina would have had to be beyond amazing to not let me down. I’m so sad I wasn’t able to give Gemina a fair chance.

Bedlam by Derek Landy

This was the most surprising book to be on this list. Bedlam wasn’t bad at all, it was still a 5 star read for me, but it is the only Skulduggery Pleasant book that was has ever been in question as to its rating. When I finished it I was left feeling a bit disappointed. I feel like the main problem was resolved really quickly for my liking.

SURPRISING

Mainly this list is just about books that surprised me in how much I loved them.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas

I know from the synopsis that going into Throne of Glass there was a very high chance I would like it. What surprised me was how much I absolutely loved this book and then the series. It really just took me by surprise, I didn’t know going into it that I would find one of my favourite series.

Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb

I didn’t know what to expect going into this book. I was reading it for a read-along and only known it was about an assassin. I fell in love with this book as well. I was totally surprised at how invested I was in Fitz’s life. This book made me cry so many times and just be glad my dog is with me.

The Survival Game by Nicky Singer

This book was 3 star for me until the end. The ending took me entirely by surprise and made me ugly cry for a long time. I honestly didn’t know I was invested in what happened to the characters until the end.

Dead of Night by Emily Goodwin

This book took me completely by surprise by the way I fell in love with the characters and how quickly I grew attached to them. I really liked the plot, the supernatural elements were done well, and the romance was hot and steamy without being too much of a quick burn for me.

The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune

I am so sad I didn’t read this book earlier because it would have definitely made my top 10 favourite books of the year. This book is on this list because I didn’t expect the love I have for this book.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

I honestly thought there was a high chance I would hate this book or DNF it, but I wanted to try it because of the hype. Boy did I love it and be surprised that I did. I loved everything about this book. It kept me on my seat, I couldn’t put it down, I loved the characters and worried about what would happen to them.

That’s it guys, there’s my list of the top books that surprised and disappointed me.
