I received an ARC from Netgalley, that doesn’t affect my opinion of the book, all my thoughts are my own and honest.
Thea—now calling herself Sestra—floats throughout a ravaged, flood soaked world.
This book wasn’t what I was expecting going into it, but that didn’t change the enjoyment for me. I thought this was just a survival story and it was, but it was much more than that too.
Meuret crafted this amazing story, using different storylines, from before the flood and the aftermath. We follow two sisters, Doris and Thea, who are going by Sestra after the flood. We learnt about their life before the flood and how Sestra is trying to survive the world with only one companion Rob.
Before the flood, Doris had a regular job, a husband and a regular life. But that doesn’t mean she is happy. Thea is an addict, thinking about how she will be able to get her next fix.
After the flood, Sestra is just trying to survive with not a lot of drinkable water, and trying to repress her memories. Not to mention the monsters called Posies that came with the flood, lurking in the water waiting and watching.
I liked the characters well enough, they weren’t the strongest part of the book, at times they weren’t very likable, but I feel like that was how they were meant to be and despite being unlikable there were times that I did like them and I cared about them.
This book was creepy and realistic, there was domestic abuse and drug addiction in here, I can’t say if that was well done personally. I would not say this book is happy in any way, it made me cry multiple times. The ending was borderline cheesy, but I appreciated that after all Seastra went through. I am looking forward to seeing that Meuret comes out with next.
