I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers, this doesn’t affect my opinion of the book, all my thoughts are my own and honest.
In the house of Gnaeus, a daughter is born, though after a few days a strange mark appears on her face and the father instantly rejects her.
This is a story about a girl ‘Ajeya’ learning how to survive in a cruel world where people think a baby who is born with a deformity is cursed. But Ajeya helps teach them the truth.
We follow Ajeya’s life from she was two-years-old until she is in her twenties.
I enjoyed the characters, as I was reading about how Eujena was cast out with her two-year-old baby. She had to learn how to survive. I found she was a very strong woman, not knowing anything about the wilderness, but she kept ongoing.
I have mixed feelings about a few of the characters, I liked Eujena at the start, but as the book went on, not so much, I felt like she made a few decisions that I didn’t agree with. I really liked Ajeya, she was a strong female protagonist that never gave up hope.
The plot was slow going, but that would be expected as it was a story about her life. I found it a bit too slow at times, and sometimes a little boring. The atmosphere was great, really made you feel like you were out in the wild. My main issue with the book was the writing style, the way the characters talked to each other, sometimes it brought me out of the story.
Overall it wasn’t amazing, but it wasn’t bad at all. I liked the overall plot, the characters, and would like to see more of Ajeya.
