Ora and the Old God by Sarah Day || Review

I received an eARC from BookSirens, that doesn’t affect my opinion of the book, all my thoughts are my own and honest.

Life in the fae realm is no fairytale.

Wild and stubborn, Ora Widogast is determined to join her brother for the annual Tabas hunt. After a terrible mistake, her brother is turned into a pig, and Ora is taken captive in the fae realm.

This book was about a girl who has to survive in the fae realm while figuring out one, a way home and two, how to save her brother.

Ora was very stubborn and didn’t let the world's view on what women should do to stop her from doing what she wanted. She cares deeply for her brother and would do anything to get back to him and save him. I liked and disliked Ora at times, I found sometimes she would act rash and didn’t stop to think things through, but while I disliked that about her I could understand her need to save her brother. There were very few side characters I liked but all the rest I disliked.

I found the world of Fae hard to follow and keep up with until the last part of the book, which made my reading experience poor. The plot was ok, it felt rushed in parts and I felt it could have done with slowing down to help the engagement of the reader.

Day’s writing style I felt was a little bit all over the place, especially in the beginning. I give credit to Day for being able to come up with a way of making the fae realm unique to her, as the fae have been done a great deal over the years.

Overall I found this book to have a lot of problems, but this could be due to the fact this is Sarah Day’s debut and this could change as her experience is increased.

Thank you to BookSirens, Sarah Day and the publishers for approving me a copy.
