August Wrap Up

Updated: Oct 5, 2020

I was able to start physically reading again this month, which was amazing. I still listened to a few audiobooks and read a few e-books, but I was so happy to be able to finally pick up a physical book. I read a total of 14 books in the month of August and had a very mixed range for my star ratings.

THE SCORCH TRIALS BY JAMES DASHNER

The Scorch Trials is the second book in the Maze Runner series, and this was such a let down for me. I had a lot more problems with it then a had good things to say about it. The characters were not fleshed out and made it very hard for me to care about them. Thomas annoyed me, he just didn’t get anything that was happening, when he should have been able to, (in my opinion) The plot was all over the place and didn’t keep me engaged. The atmosphere was the only thing I liked about this book. It was well done and I like being in the world Dashner created.

THE SLUG QUEEN CHRONICLES: SEASON ONE BY S.O. THOMAS

This was a very whimsical read, I loved the world, it had so much depth to it and it was a dark fantasy middle grade. The main character annoyed me, but I grew to like her throughout the book. S.O. Thomas’s writing was very descriptive and easy to read. It had a very solid plot with a very magical world.

CITY OF BONES BY CASSANDRA CLARE

City of Bones is the first book in the Mortal Instrument series, it’s very hyped and I have been looking forward to reading it for a while. Umm, it was just ok for me. I really didn’t love it but didn’t hate it either, it was just ok and I can’t tell you why. I did love Magnus and Alec and am looking forward to seeing their relationship throughout the series progress.

THE JELLYFISH EFFECT BY UFUK OZDEN

I found the concept of this book really intriguing, but I didn’t gel with it at all. I felt like everything in this book was lacking. The writing was very hard to get through, dense and sometimes I didn’t understand what was happening, it would change very quickly that I felt like I got whiplash, or I would have to reread a paragraph to see if I had missed something. There wasn’t much of a plot, but what I could see of it, it was all over the place and hard to follow, I didn’t like the characters, they didn’t feel realistic and something about them rubbed me up the wrong way. But I could see why other people would like this but, it just definitely wasn’t for me.

THE DEATH CURE BY JAMES DASHNER

This is the third book in the Maze Runner series and was better than The Scorch Trials, and the characters didn’t annoy me as much as in The Scorch trials, I liked the plot better in this book.

HEIR OF FIRE BY SARAH. J. MAAS

This is the third book in the Throne of Glass series. OMG I absolutely loved this book so much. I loved everything about it, I loved the plot, the characters, new and old. Everything, this could become one of my favourite series. Rowan also was just perfection.

THE KEY TO RONDO BY EMILY RODDA

This is about a boy Leo who has been given an old family heirloom. Inside holds a magic kingdom. I enjoyed the book, my favourite part was when the queen takes Mimi’s (Leo’s cousin) dog, and she won’t take no for an answer. She is going to save her dog. I loved it. It had a good atmosphere, good villains, and you honestly didn’t know who to trust until the end.

WHERE DREAMS DESCEND BY JANELLA ANGELES

This book had a very strong female protagonist that I really appreciated, a good slow-burn romance that I enjoyed, a great magical system and was a book full of secrets. It was the writing that I loved the most, it was beautifully written, very lyrical and just pretty. But that made it a slow book to get into and throughout the middle, but I felt like it was worth it.

A FLOOD OF POSIES BY TIFFANY MEURET

I really enjoyed this book. The characters weren’t the strong part of the book, but I liked them well enough. This book’s atmosphere was amazing, it was so creepy and realistic, I loved it. There was domestic abuse and drug addiction in here, so be careful if that is something that triggers you. I wouldn’t say this book is happy in any way as it made me cry multiple times. The ending was borderline cheesy, but I appreciated that after all Seastra went through.

THE ASSASSIN’S BLADE BY SARAH J. MAAS

What can I say, this book broke my heart, even though I knew what was going to happen. I want justice for what happened to Sam, and I really hope that it happens soon.

EVERYTHING WE MIGHT HAVE BEEN BY MEGAN WALKER AND JANCI PATTERSON

I liked the book well enough. The characters were very relatable and realistic, and they both had a lot of insecurities which I felt was done very well. The plot was good, it had a happy ending which I appreciated, I also liked the problems that were addressed in the book. But the thing that let this book down for me was how quick the romance happened. It’s just not a trope of romance that I love.

ACE OF SHADES BY AMANDA FOODY

I really liked the premise of this book, a girl goes to a corrupt city to find her mother and has to work with a street lord. I just didn’t love the execution as much. There were definitely things I liked about this book, and things I didn’t. I really enjoyed the characters and the character development though out, the city was very intriguing and I really liked reading about it. I found this book slow, and it lost my interested quite easily in the beginning, so I found it hard to pick up when I was reading other books. Once I got past a certain point, I was more inclined to pick it up. I really liked the rep in here.

GODSGRAVE BY JAY KRISTOFF

Godsgrave is the second book in the Nevernight Chronicles. I don’t know what let this book down for me, I just didn’t love this book as much as I did Nevernight. But I still enjoyed the plot, it was good to be back in this world.

A HARE IN THE WILDNESS BY S.E. TURNER

This book was a growing-up story, from the age of two until she was in her twenties. The plot was slow going, but that would be expected as it was a story about her life. The atmosphere was great, really made you feel like you were out in the wild. I liked the characters, especially the main character Ajeya. My main issue with the book was the writing style, the way the characters talked to each other, sometimes it brought me out of the story.

That is all the books I managed to read in the month of August. I read all the books on my set TBR and I am so proud of that as I haven’t done it since March. I hope you have a great reading month too.
