JUNE WRAP UP

Updated: Oct 5, 2020

I mainly listened to audiobooks this month as I still can’t physically read too well as I am dealing with my Post Concussion Syndrome. I read 12 books in the month of June, which is not bad at all and I am proud of myself for that. I only participated in one readathon this month and that was MakeYourMythTake, link to host below.

The Order of the Key by Justine Manzano

I was given an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Jacklyn Madison is an ordinary girl living in the Bronx until she comes home one day and gets attacks by monsters. Her life changes and finds out her parents were apart of The Order of the key. I had a good time reading this. The plot was engaging and fast-paced. I enjoyed the romance element of the book. I found the characters were relatable and realistic. But I felt like the ending was rushed and that made this a 3 ★ for me.

The Silver Brumby by Elyne Mitchell

Thowra is a silver brumby. His mother Bell Bell at birth told him, he would have to be quick as the wind to survive, against men who will want to call him their own and horses who will be jealous of his coat. This was a reread for me. I love this book so much, Elyne Mitchell wrote this beautifully written book. We are in Thowra’s point of view as he grows up. Thowra is amazing, he is so wild and free.

The Bone Witch by Rin Chupecco

Tea can raise the dead, and to be clear she did not mean to raise her brother. Tea leaves her home to be taught to control her magic. The Bone Witch was beautifully written, I liked the characters and the atmosphere. The magic was very unique. But I didn’t love this book, and I can’t pinpoint why.

Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb

This is the 2nd book in the Farseer Trilogy. This series is an adult coming of age fantasy that follows the royal bastard son of Prince Chivarly, his name is Fitz. Just wow this book was a roller coaster. I loved this book so much and as much as Assassin’s Apprentice. I love Fitz as well. It was so rich in politics and had so much world-building in there while not being dense. I grew more attached to the characters so I got to know them more. Robin Hobb was able to make me feel very strongly about what happened to the characters. I also love the magic system, it is one of my favourite magic systems out there.

The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White

This is an Arthurian legend retelling. Guinevere has come to a foreign country to wed a stranger. Magic is clawing at the borders, and maybe inside the castle too. I liked this book more then I thought I was going to, after hearing a lot of negative reviews so I was a bit put off. But it surprised me, I liked the way the characters were betrayed, the magic was different and there were a few surprises along the way.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Six of Crows is the first novel in the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo.

Kaz Brekker is offered an impossible job to break into a prison that has never been breached before and save a prisoner that holds the future of Grisha. But to succeed he must have the perfect crew. This was another reread for me, and it was one of my favourite books of 2019. I’m very glad I read Shadow and Bone trilogy before I continued with Crooked Kingdom. I picked up so much more the second time around and I loved it as much as I did the first time I read it.

To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo

Lira is a siren. Ellian is a siren hunter. It’s a dark Little Mermaid retelling. Again I heard bad reviews about this book and I was a bit put off, but this book surprised me too. I really enjoyed this book. I found the plot really engaging, I found the characters interesting to read about, but what made it really enjoyable was the romance. I am really starting to figure out I like hate to love, slow-burn romances. Which is why I ended up enjoying this book more than I thought I would.

Heart Stopper Vol 3 by Alice Oseman

Heartstopper is a boy meets boy romance. I loved the first two volumes when I read them last year, but I feel like my taste in romances have changed over 12 months. It was still enjoyable for me, but I didn’t love it as much as the other two volumes.

By the Book by Amanda Sellet

Mary Porter-Malcolm knows how to deal with life through fiction. I buddy read this book with my friend. Going into it I really thought I wasn’t going to like it from the blurb, but it surprised me. Mary learns what it is like to have real friends and that maybe you can’t learn everything you need from a book. Also, I was all there for the romance.

Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

When Sophie Hatter is cursed she goes off to find her fortune. This was my third reread of the month. My friend Anne read it earlier this year and loved it so I reread it so we can buddy read the rest of the series together. It was a very whimsical read. I loved it.

House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig

In a manor by the sea twelve sisters are cursed. We follow Annaleigh as she figures out that maybe her sister’s death wasn’t an accident after all. I needed to trust my gut when it comes to who was good and bad. It was a very slow start and I considered putting it down as I was in a reading slump because of my head and this book wasn’t helping. After a while, it picked up and I got into the story and started liking it, I liked the twists and the creepy aspects. My favourite quote from the book is ‘Come dance with me’

3

The Lost Sisters by Holly Black

This is a novella of Taryn’s point of view, as to why she did what she did in Cruel Prince. What can I say, I hate Taryn very much. I didn’t enjoy the writing style for the novella and my dislike for Taryn added to my unenjoyment.
