Mid-year Book Freak Out Tag

Its that time of the year, I know I'm a bit late posting this tag as a lot of people post in the middle of June.

Best book you’ve read so far in 2020

This question is so hard to answer I have read so many books that I loved. I would choose Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman, I couldn’t fault it, I loved everything about it, but I am trying to do a different book for each question and spoiler I am using it for another question. There are a few I could choose from so I am going to just list a few, that won’t be down in other questions.

Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Mass

Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

Every Skulduggery Pleasant book I have read this year.

There are so many more I could choose but these are the ones that stuck out for me.

Best sequel you’ve read as far in 2020

Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb. This is the 2nd book in the Farseer Trilogy. The series is an adult coming of age fantasy that follows the royal bastard son of Prince Chivalry, Fitz. Just wow it was a roller coaster of a ride through this book. I loved this book so much and the first Assassin’s Apprentice. I love Fitz so much and I love the world Robin Hobb created. It was so rich in politics, the world-building, the characters, and the magic. Hobb has been able to make me hate a character so much it’s unbelievable.

New release you haven't read yet, but want to.

Season of War by Derek Landy. This was my most anticipated release of the whole year and I can’t believe I have not got to it yet, but life right. Season of War is the 13th book in the Skulduggery Pleasant series or the 4th in the second series. It follows a walking detective skeleton called Skulduggery Pleasant. This is one of my all-time favourite series.

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.

I have two that I can’t wait to be released.

The Serpent’s Curse by Lisa Maxwell the third book in The Last Magician series. The Last Magician was one of my favourite books of 2019, and I am waiting till a little closer to the release date of The Serpent’s Curse before I read The Devil’s Theif.

Blood & Honey by Shelby Mahurin the squeal of Serpent & Dove. I know there have been so many mixed opinions of Serpent & Dove but I loved it.

Biggest disappointment.

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. I’ve had this book on my TBR since it came out in 2018 and only just got around to reading it this year. I gave this book 3 stars and it was a low 3 stars at that. I really thought I was going to love this book so much, but I just didn’t. I really didn’t like the characters, I couldn’t imagine the world too well and I didn’t like Holly Black’s writing too much. I will continue with the series as I have heard it gets better.

Biggest surprise.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. So this is my favourite book of the year and I read it back in January. I picked it up in the library after hearing so many people loving it, but because of the format and that I haven’t read much science fiction I honestly didn’t think I would enjoy it too much, but I wanted to know what all the hype was about and I’m so happy I did. The characters, the world-building, the tension, I was sitting on my seat and wouldn’t put the book down. I loved it so much.

Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you)

There are a few authors that I think could be my favourite, but I don’t feel like I have read enough books of each to decide which one. So I have a list of three.

Sarah. J Mass – I have read the first two books in the Throne of Glass series and I loved them so much, I really enjoyed the world she created, the characters were interesting but it was the plot I loved the most.

Robin Hobb – I Have read the first 2 books in the farseer trilogy and OMG, wow. I love the world Robin Hobb created. It was so rich in politics, the world-building, the characters, and the magic.

Jay Kristoff – I have read Illuminae and Nevernight and really loved both. I love Kristoff’s sense of humour and his writing.

Newest fictional crush.

I don’t have a fictional crush that is in a book. But I do have one in a TV show. Dean Winchester in supernatural.

Newest favourite character.

I have a few I can’t decide which is my favourite.

There is Mia Covere and Mr Kindly from Nevernight, I like their relationship and how strong-minded Mia is. There is Kady from Illuminae, she just blew me away with her stubbornness. Nathaniel from Sorcery of Thorns, who doesn’t like a sorcerer with a depressing past.

A book that made you cry.

I have cried in when reading so many books, but the one that stood out the most was The Survival Game by Nicky Singer. This books ending broke me in so many ways. I just didn’t know how Singer could do that to me. I thought I knew the ending from about 50 pages to the end, and I prepared for it, but I was wrong and it was so much worse.

A book that made you happy.

Gargantis by Thomas Taylor the sequel of Malamnder. What can I say it was an amazing read in my eyes. I loved every bit of the story. Malamnder follows Herbert Lemon the Lost and Founder of the Great Nautilus Hotel and he is a cinnamon roll as he is too pure for this world and I love him with all my heart. Herbert takes his job very seriously in finding the rightful ownership to lost things and finds himself getting into danger with his best friend Violet Parmer who is brave, smart and a bold girl.

The most beautiful book you've bought so far this year (or received)

The language of thorns by Leigh Bardugo, just wow this honestly is the most beautiful book I own, I just love it so much.

What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

Oh, so many there’s too many count. I guess the rest of the books on my top 20 books to read before 2021. As well as the ARCs I have to read.
